Synopsis (from Goodreads): You can’t run from destiny...Malika wants nothing more than to be ordinary, to forget her horrific past and live safely under a mountain with her adoptive father. But fate is not so kind, and destiny will not be denied. A single revelation can change everything...There is power in Malika’s blood, power that comes with a responsibility she would rather run from. With a mentor who pushes her to the limit and sets her blood on fire, she must allow herself to become the very best version of herself without losing her heart in the process. For there is no room for love on the battlefield.

Blood Blade is a prequel to Forest of Demons, and while I spent my time reading looking for links between the stories (and I think I worked it out though it remains to be seen if I'm right!) The two books can be read as standalones though they are both fantastic so I would recommend reading them both!

The main character, Malika, really went on a journey. While she started the book naive in some ways (but definitely not in others) and the journey she went on changed her into the woman she needed to be. She had to think in a political way as well as as a commander and that made her a complex and interesting character.

There was a subtle romantic story in Blood Blade, though it wasn't a driving factor behind Malika's story. What started as mere attraction grew into more as the characters got to know each other and came to feel more. It did lead to Malika making certain decisions, but not necessarily the ones you would expect.

There was a fairly small cast of characters, and that meant that the time in the book could really focus on Malika and the action surrounding her. I wasn't sure about some of the characters, and others made me dislike them intensly, though I do have a slight feeling that we may not quite be fnished with several of the characters!

This was a great read, I would greatly recommend it!
