The Hollow, home to the pixies, has been terrorised by Goblins. With her mother missing, Ash takes it on herself to make sure that everyone is fed and as safe as possible. When the pixies all have to go to a ball, it is announced that the person whose foot fits a small shoe will marry the Goblin ruler's son, Garnet. Garnet is surprised when Ash's foot fits, thinking that the shoe was too small for anyone's foot. But Ash and Garnet soon find themselves liking each other, and will do whatever they can to defeat the Goblins.
Ash Rising is the first new new story in Tales Beyond the Veil (the others have been revamped stories I'd read before). I like how the series are fairy tale retellings but actually are nothing like the original. There are a lot of hallmarks of the classic Cinderella tale in Ash Rising, but it is made completely the authors' own.
Ash is a strong female character, she knows what she wants and doesn't shy away from getting on with it. I liked having a female character that wouldn't let the man do all the saving. Saying that when her and Garnet worked together they did even better.
There were a few links to the previous books, mainly in references to Silver and Scarlett. Though the stories are related it isn't 100% necessary to read them in order and they can be read as stand alone. However don't...because it's a great series and you should read them all!
