Deryn is a slayer, a species hated by vampires and shifters. But with her powers dampened they can’t tell what she is. In an alternative universe she finds herself studying ancient writings that hint to an enemy thought to be gone. Deryn also finds herself trying to prevent the events she saw in a dream, events where Alejandro dies in front of her. Though neither of them can explain why it matters so much to them, they do everything in their power to keep each other safe.

Wow. I already knew that Roth was good at creating different worlds and mythologies and they are always engaging. But Warriors of Darkness took that to a whole new level. There was layer upon layer of world building and it all worked in harmony to create something that was deep and well structured.

I really liked how the focus of this book wasn’t just on the romance (though that was there) but there was also a lot of focus on the other characters around. This included the friendship that bloomed between Deryn and Fulk which created a funny level of banter to add into the mix.

The chemistry between Deryn and Alejandro was most definitely there, even when they were only talking. I did find it amusing that the other characters in the book kept pointing out what was between them but they were kind of clueless!

I also really liked that Deryn was such a strong female character. She looked small and fragile but she could really pack a punch, and I liked that she didn’t have to be one or the other when both worked well for her.

Unsurprisingly I really enjoyed Warriors of Darkness…but then again there was never really any doubt!
