The one thing that Cassandra wasn't expecting when she found out she was dying was that it would be by drowning. As soon as Iason sees Cassandra he feels an attraction, following his people's rules he saves her, taking her to his home. Once there he discovers her illness and sets about healing her, knowing full well what the consequences could be...

Commanding the Tides happened concurrently to the previous book in the series, The Mighty Hunter, which means that they could be read as stand alones. However I do think that the full effect of the story is better seen when the books are read in order. Especially slightly later on in the book where the events do over take those slightly (though not so much so that it means anything is majorly spoilt).

I liked having a character that didn't freak out much about the supernatural but that itself actually felt natural. I know that sounds strange, but sometimes I can't help but think that characters' reactions are unrealistic, but with Cassandra her not being so freaked out (and her explanation) seemed to work for me.

I also hadn't quite realised how manly it was possible to make mermen (Merr), but somehow Pillow manages to make her characters alpha and powerful while retaining the grace and beauty of the Merr race. The descriptions of the deep sea to go along with this makes for captivating and detailed reading.

I'm looking forward to reading more in the series and finding out some answers to some of the minor questions currently unanswered!
