Blog Tour: Walled by Anne Tibbets

I received a copy of Walled in exchange for my review.

It's been about 18 months since Naya dropped off Auberge's radar with Ric. Now living off the grid with her two daughters, Clea and Adena, the only thing that would make it better would be if she could let Ric touch her. Still plagued by her time as a sex slave on the Line, Naya worries about her daughters encoutering the same fate. When Sonya finally tracks them down she convinces Naya, and then Ric, to help her topple Auberge by breaking into HQ and disabling communications. But doing so leads to places that Naya wasn't aware of, and the consequences will affect the whole world...

So I was reading Walled and really enjoying it but thinking that the first book was slightly better. Then I reached the last line and changed my mind completely. I was almost in tears when I read it which says something about the emotion that this book manages to evoke.

I liked the fact that there was a gap between the events of Carrier and the events of Walled, it meant that Naya's pregnancy was over and that they'd moved on. But I also think it really showed how the victims of slavery can still be affected years afterwards. There was no magic that had happened in the past year and a bit that meant that Naya was able to have sex with Ric, even though she had feelings for him, and she really had to work at it to let him near her like that. This meant that when they finally did come together (the second time, the first one was not good for Naya - and not Ric's fault) the moment was much stronger than any other counterpart.

I liked the way that Naya's feelings for her daughters worked as well. At first she was kind of a little indifferent. Well not indifferent, she clearly cared for them, but she wasn't overly maternal and didn't seem to want all that much to do with them looking after them wise. Then when she wasn't with them, her feelings for them really progressed and she went to great lengths for them. I thought it worked.

Walled revealed much more about the world around Auberge as well, and I thought that the Corporation (basically a bit like a country) idea was interesting, plausible and different. They interacted a lot like countries, well except for Auberge, and there seems to be a lot of potential for expansion.

I've loved this series, it's hard hitting and emotional in places but it is a great read!

Freedom means making brutal choices.

Rebel lovers Naya and Ric have survived one year in hiding, raising Naya’s twins from infants to toddlers in the shadow of the brutal Auberge dictatorship. They’re alive, and they’re together, but the city is crumbling around them and the haunting memory of Naya’s dark days on The Line have never fully left them. Living in isolation won’t be an option forever.

When a mysterious revolutionary seeks their help to infiltrate Auberge’s electronic heart and shut it down, it’s an opportunity—it’s risky, yes, but if it works they’ll get out of the city and taste freedom for the first time. Naya needs this. They need this.

Beyond the broken walls of Auberge, Naya and Ric find the paradise they’ve always longed for. But with anarchy reigning and Naya’s children lost amidst the chaos, they’ll need to forfeit their post-apocalyptic Eden…or commit an unspeakable act.

Book two of two.
