Blog Tour & Giveaway: The Selkie Spell by Sophie Moss

I received a copy of The Selkie Spell in exchange for my review.

Tara is on the run from a past that haunts her and has ended up at Seal Island. One look at the new arrival brings back memories that Dominic would rather forget and he wants to have nothing to do with her. But his friends, and his daughter,  seem to have other ideas, especially as Kesley and Glenna both seem to think that Tara is the Selkie descendant, sent to break the hold that the island has on the spirit of the original selkie. The last thing Tara wanted or needed was to form ties with the island, and with her past catching up with her,  those that she's come to care about are in as much danger as she is.

Well that definitely wasn't what I expected!  For some reason I was expecting a YA style read with a heavy focus on selkie shape shifting. Which is the complete opposite of what this book is, and I loved it for that!

Its almost like there are two strands of the story becoming woven together.  The story of Tara running from abuse and learning to trust again, and the story of the selkie, who was trapped via a similar set of events. The two stories worked incrediably well together and I couldn't imagine one being without the other and working as well.

This book did really tug at my heart strings though, mostly because of the subject of domestic abuse being at the forefront. Though no abuse was seen on page in great detail,  it was made clear that it had had a lasting affect on the characters and had an important part to play in the story. There was also the interesting moral dilemma of whether creating fake identities for battered women wanting to escape, which I hadn't considered before.

Partly because of the domestic abuse angle, and partly because of other issues, the relationship between Dominic and Tara progressed at a slow pace, and I couldn't help but think that that worked. It felt right for the characters and for the story. Though I was definitely routing for the two of them! I thought they worked well together!

This is a complex book which really draws you into the story. Well worth a read!

American doctor Tara Moore wants to disappear. On the run from an abusive husband, she seeks shelter on a windswept Irish island and dismisses the villagers' speculation that she is descended from a selkie—a magical creature who is bewitching the island. But when a ghostly woman appears to her with a warning, Tara realizes it was more than chance that brought her to this island. Desperate to escape a dark and dangerous past, she struggles against a passionate attraction to handsome islander, Dominic O'Sullivan. But the enchantment of the island soon overpowers her and she falls helpless under its spell. Caught between magic and reality, Tara must find a way to wield both when a dangerous stranger from her past arrives, threatening to destroy the lives of everyone on the island.
