Blog Tour & Giveaway: #scandal by Sarah Ockler

I received a copy of #scandal in exchange for my review.

Convinced by her best friend Ellie to cover for her while she is sick, Lucy ends up going to the prom with Cole, the boy she's been in love with for 4 years...and her best friends boyfriend. But when they share a kiss everything gets more complicated, even if Cole and Ellie have really broken up, and things only get worse when photos get posted the next day of all the antics that went on at the lodge party...including photos of Lucy and Cole in bed together. Even bigger problem: They're on Lucy's facebook page. Lucy is desperate to clear her name and prove it wasn't her, but at the same time, can her feelings for Cole allow that? She's about to find out who her real friends are...and sometimes that can make all the difference.

The best way I could describe #scandal is as an updated gossip girl, with the exception that #scandal has a kick ass zombie geek as the main character (which is way better!) And in a similar way to gossip girl, once you find out who is behind Miss Demeanor (#scandal's version) you can't look at the story in the same way. And just like GG I was shocked at who Miss Demeanor was (GG spoiler - I mean really, who actually suspected Dan...took me completely by surprise!)

I loved Lucy as a main character, she was conflicted by what she had done, and saw red when she was framed/shunned and acted exactly like any person would in her circumstances, and the characters around her acted accordingly. There was no super soppy "I'm-going-to-stand-by-you-no-matter-what" moments, rather Cole was determined to get to the bottom of it, but didn't push Lucy to be in a relationship and even at one point told her she wasn't acting like she should.

The really interesting point of this book was the way that facebook was included, and the more negative sides of it. Everybody does stupid things, but the way that they are posted on facebook is a real life problem for teenagers nowadays (and lets be fair, to us Uni students too, normally I'm in charge of the photos so there's nothing too outrageous of me on there! But still). And the way things spread. A lot of modern books do seem to completely ignore social media, and I don't know why, especially as it is so widely used (If I wrote a diary of my day it would definitely include social media multiple times...just the amount I blog pushes that up!)

The sweetest part of this book though was finding out that people you didn't know that well were actually the best friends that you could have, which was very much what Lucy found with the (e)VIL group (they were anti-vanity internet/technology) and some of the other characters that were introduced. As well as the mending relationship between Lucy and her sister.

And of course there was the mystery...well several mysteries really. 1. who is Miss Demeanor. 2. Who was behind the Juicy Lucy facebook page. 3. Who stole Lucy's phone and posted to facebook. The only one that didn't surprise me was number 2 (because she had to be behind something), but the other two took me completely by surprise (Dan Humphry all over again for number 1), and the 3rd...well that person I had never even considered as being guilty!

This has been a great read, definitely worth it!

Lucy’s learned some important lessons from tabloid darling Jayla Heart’s all-too-public blunders: Avoid the spotlight, don’t feed the Internet trolls, and keep your secrets secret. The policy has served Lucy well all through high school, so when her best friend Ellie gets sick before prom and begs her to step in as Cole’s date, she accepts with a smile, silencing about ten different reservations. Like the one where she’d rather stay home shredding online zombies. And the one where she hates playing dress-up. And especially the one where she’s been secretly in love with Cole since the dawn of time.

When Cole surprises her at the after party with a kiss under the stars, it’s everything Lucy has ever dreamed of… and the biggest BFF deal-breaker ever. Despite Cole’s lingering sweetness, Lucy knows they’ll have to ’fess up to Ellie. But before they get the chance, Lucy’s own Facebook profile mysteriously explodes with compromising pics of her and Cole, along with tons of other students’ party indiscretions. Tagged. Liked. And furiously viral.

By Monday morning, Lucy’s been branded a slut, a backstabber, and a narc, mired in a tabloid-worthy scandal just weeks before graduation.

Lucy’s been battling undead masses online long enough to know there’s only one way to survive a disaster of this magnitude: Stand up and fight. Game plan? Uncover and expose the Facebook hacker, win back her best friend’s trust, and graduate with a clean slate.

There’s just one snag—Cole. Turns out Lucy’s not the only one who’s been harboring unrequited love...

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a picture tagged on Miss Demeanor’s Scandal of the Month page is worth about a million. Especially when the story all those words tell is an absolute lie.

Well, mostly a lie.

The part about falling asleep in his arms is sort of true. I don’t remember the details about the horse, or how it got into the living room exactly, but judging from the smell that morning, that part’s true too. And yes, the Harvard-bound debate team captain definitely cannonballed into the pond wearing only tuxedo socks and silver fairy wings. Everyone got shots of that.

But there’s no way the other stuff happened.

Not like the pictures are saying it did.
