Blog Tour & Giveaway: How to Date a Nerd by Cassie Mae

I received a copy of How to Date a Nerd, book 1 of the How To series, in exchange for my review.

Zoe has everything, popularity, hot boys and crazy nights. But she has a secret, at heart she is a total nerd, and not only that, but she is in love with the guy next door, the guy known as King of the Nerds at school. Zoe has a war going in inside her, the popular Zoe vs the Nerd Zoe, and its only spending time around Zak that makes her think about it more. After getting too drunk one night she finds herself in Zak's arms, and the journey to embrace her inner nerd truly begins.

Absolutely loved this book! I've read books a bit like it before, as in teenage find yourself books, and they're really resonating with me at the moment (probably because of the stage of life I'm at, about to join the real world after Uni). But this one more than most.

I loved the inner battle between the Zoes, all girls in school have the desire to be liked, by both boys and other girls, and it really is a harsh environment, which is something that I really though Mae managed to convey.

What I also think she did well was capturing the inner nerd in Zoe. Maybe not quite to the same extent as her, but everyone has a little bit of nerd in them, and though that is becoming more acceptable, it still isn't something that most people openly discuss, and coming to terms with that part of you can be tricky. Which again was a believable journey.

The romance between Zoe and Zak was complicated. The started as neighbours (and previously had been friends) and then progressed to friendship, and then to something more. The pace was realistic for the age that they were at (which I presumed was somewhere between 16 and 18 though I don't think it was ever explicitly said) and wasn't just the perfect romance. Add to that the way that the author captured other, more superficial romances that happened in school (which again, I thought were realistic) and she captured it perfectly.

This book was a sweet YA romance, but it was also so much more than that, it was a story of self acceptance, which I think would resonate with most people!

Summary from Goodreads:
Sierra Livingston’s got it bad for her sister’s best friend, Levi Mason—the boy who carries his drumsticks in his pocket, marches with the school’s band, and taps his feet to whatever beat runs through his head. Sierra racks her brain for ways to impress the sexy drummer, but the short skirts and bursting cleavage don’t seem to cut it.

When Sierra gets paired with Levi’s sister, Brea, for a mentorship program, they strike a deal. In exchange for Sierra keeping her mouth shut about Brea ditching the program, Brea lets Sierra dig for more info on Levi to help get the guy of her dreams.

But when Sierra discovers Levi no longer plays the drums, his family has moved into a trailer, and he’s traded in his Range Rover for a baby blue moped, Sierra’s not sure if she can go through with violating his privacy. She’ll have to find the courage to ask him straight out—if he’s willing to let her in—and explore other ways to seduce the school’s band geek.
