Blog Tour & Giveaway: Alive by Megan D Martin

I received a copy of Alive in exchange for my review.

It has been four years since the Crave and the world fell apart around Eve and Gage, and it has been 4 years since they have seen each other. Gage was always the popular guy in school, whereas Eve was the freak with the weird family, though they wanted each other none the less. They are both fighting for their lives against Jenks (as called by Eve) or gurghs (as Gage calls them) when they run into each other again. Deep down they have never got over their feelings for one another, and yet they are still struggling to accept them, and their journey takes them through dangerous circumstances from which they may never survive.

THIS is what is missing from zombie apocalypse fiction! Basically its a romance, except that both characters are ridiculously kick ass at getting rid of zombies (or jenks/gurghs whichever you prefer). Plus when they are being kick ass the author is still managing to keep up the suspense, and there were one or two moments where I couldn't help but think that it may end up being a bitter sweet ending where they accept their love for one another but one of them dies. As it is the ending made me really happy, and it was a good end to the novel, but it also left me craving more (pun completely unintentional.)

The romance between Gage and Eve played out on two levels, the first was in the present when they are both destroying zombies and trying to survive, and the other is their original story in the past (aka High School). The former was filled with passion, anger, resentment, respect and love (though the last one wouldn't be admitted) and the sparring between the two of them does lead to some threats on both their parts. But you could also see that actually they were good together. And when they got jealous it was really cute!

The story of them in high school was pretty much your classic popular kid and geek story, except that it didn't end so well really. They liked each other and even went as far as having sex (I'll talk about that in a moment) but Gage broke Eve's heart (which is made clear early on, I'm not spoiling anything). Basically their cryptic reminiscing really had me really intrigued as to what exactly went on between them.

There was one other major thing that was talked about in the past, and that was Eve's relationship with her family. I was welling up at one point because no child should ever go through that. Especially if the only 'crime' she had actually committed was being conceived outside of marriage (and if you look at it logically it was actually her parents fault not her's).

There was one other story playing out in the book as well, and that was of Eve's younger sister, Olive. There doesn't really appear to be much love between Eve and Olive, because of their parents, but Eve still wants to find her little sister (not that Olive really seems to care). Olive got herself into a position where she is protected in exchange for sex basically, but to me she didn't really seem like a very nice person and up until the epilogue she never seems to actually do anything for anyone else.

Ok, so the sex in the book, there is some. Which surprised me because for some reason I thought it was YA, I was wrong (as in it was me not reading properly and I certainly didn't mind, I think I prefer NA), it is most definitely NA. There isn't that much sex though, though both Olive and Eve refer to rape and attempted rape, which unfortunately would happen if a zombie outbreak occurred. The way the sisters' view it is different though, Olive uses sex to survive, whereas Eve seems to accidentally end up in passionate (and loving) situations with Gage. I'll let you guess which is the most descriptive.

I loved this book, and will definitely look out for the sequel (Infected). I'm so impressed by the way that the author manages to balance the romance, action and occasional humour, so well without any of them missing out!
