Blog Tour & Giveaway: Muse Unexpected by V C Birlidis
Having grown up with a loving mother and father in America, the last thing Sophie expected was to be told that she is a Muse. As in a demi God Muse, and to say that Sophie isn't best impressed would be an accurate summary. After the death of her father, Sophie and her mother Callie return to their people's homeland, Greece, and to Georgia, Callie's mother. The only icing on the cake for Sophie is her new friend, and part Gorgon, Angela, and the extremely attractive part Minotaur that works in the gardens. The Olympian Gods are getting restless, and Penny is determined to get the revenge she is desperate to get, and will go as far as enlisting the help of Persephone, who longs to leave her exile in the Underworld.
This was an interesting twist on mythology (something that a lot of the books I seem to have read this month revolve around, and there's been more than one Sophie too!) In this case I thought it was very interesting how the author wove together the mythology of ancient Greece and traditional Christian concepts, such as a single God and fallen angels. If you'd told me before reading this that that would work, then I don't think that I would have believed it. Don't get me wrong though, there isn't a particularly heavy on the Christianity things.
This book has clearly been a set up for a bigger story arc, in a good way that is. Muse Unexpected certainly has a contained storyline, but at the same time there are things left unresolved that make it clear that there is a larger story to come. If I'm honest, this is how I like my books when they are a series!
And, something that most definitely means this book gets my stamp of approval; I got surprised. I spent about 90% of the book trying to work out just who Penny was (you are told at her first appearance that she is a goddess, I just spent the time trying to figure out which one) and when I was told I was completely shocked, definitely hadn't seen that one coming!
All in all and interesting, and refreshing approach to the myths of ancient Greece.
Muse Unexpected "We're Muses. Not vampires, not fairies, not werewolves. We're Muses." Sophie was sure her mother had reached an epic level of crazy. ‘We're Muses?' She thought Muses were lame, not to mention she found the idea ridiculous. However, Sophie couldn't explain away her physical transformation that made Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries look like a bad Walmart make-over, not to mention why her mood swings triggered an uncontrollable ability to shoot powerful bursts of energy out of her hands. Sophie soon realizes modern day Muses have evolved into powerful guardians of humankind, tasked with keeping mortals on the right path and the original Olympians locked away from the world. But old hatreds don't die easily, especially for immortal enemies that have an eternity to plot and gather their forces. Well aware of the Fates' foretelling of another Olympian war, and a young Muse that would rise up as a warrior and defeat them, the Olympians have vowed to either possess Sophie or destroy her. Either way, they will make sure everyone associated with their imprisonment will reap an eternal damnation in the Underworld, leaving the Olympians to restore Mount Olympus and force humankind into a future of never-ending servitude and misery.
