CEO of DDE, Alex Damon makes some changes to his company, including promoting Natalie Hall, the adopted daughter of a Politician aligned with the woman who broke Alex's Dad's heart, Emily Rondale. Alex is determined to seek revenge on the Rondales and wants to take everything from them, starting with Natalie. But Alex hasn't bargained for the intelligent, sexy and independent Natalie, and the affect that she has on him, causing his seduction to quite quickly become one of the heart rather than one of revenge. Things are complicated further when Alex's right hand man, Ethan, begins to suspect Natalie of spying on the company.
This book has a bit of everything in it! Well there is a lot of romance, but it seems to me that there were more hurdles for Alex and Natalie to overcome than most fictional characters encounter in their relationships. Their romance also tackled some very real issues, including the effects of a workplace romance, the possibility of an unplanned pregnancy, and the desire for adopted children to know where they came from.
I've never read a book that was set in a business environment and actually included aspects of the business within the story itself, or at least not to this extent, and I must say that I actually really enjoyed that bit of the story! Saying that, my degree has given me a fair amount of insight into how mergers, takeovers and other bids work, so maybe that explains the interest!
Something else that I particularly likes was the fact that some of Natalie's cultural heritage was made into a part of her life, the best example being the statues, despite the fact that she was adopted. For me its the small details like that that make the difference between a good book, and a great book!
What should've been a straightforward eye-for-an-eye starts to unravel as Natalie's unflinching loyalty and kindness begin to thaw Alex's cold intent. But caring for her is unthinkable...since he plans to use everything in his power to ruin her family and everyone else she holds dear.
Unwilling to let her go this time, Ethan makes a simple proposition: a job, a place to stay, and an exclusive affair that will end when either of them finds someone else. But with her dark, painful past catching up to her, Kerri may have to bolt again -- even though her heart is telling her to stay. And Ethan's not giving her up without fighting to make their "temporary" arrangement something far more permanent...
