Ethan and Jayna have been banned from seeing each other on Earth, but are allowed to marry on the Astral Plane, which is an alternative dimension. The couple are demon fighters, who extinguish demons and do good deeds on earth. On the other hand is Quintin, who is tricked into becoming a demon's slave as a young boy, and has become a Shadow. Upon visiting the Underworld he meets Cassandra, a fellow Shadow, who wants to capture a demon and use it to transport a hidden cache of gold to earth. The fight between good and bad is on in The Astral Ordinance Book II, both within the characters themselves and between them.
I think that it is safe to say that the most powerful theme in this book is that of good and bad karma. Though there are some references to God and other spiritual ideas, I didn't feel like they were overwhelming in number, and that in fact the main focus was more on the doing good things, and on spirituality. I think that this is a good thing, as too much focus on a specific religion could put a lot of readers off.
There are a wide variety of characters in The Astral Ordinance Book II, which means that there is most likely some character for everyone to relate to. For me the most interesting character was Quintin. It was obvious from the beginning, that though he was a 'bad' guy from the start, he had redeeming features and he wanted to be good. Those of you who have read my reviews before will know just how much I like grey characters, they seem much more real to me (though maybe a little less grey than Quintin most of the time!)
There were so many interesting concepts in The Astral Ordinance Book II, the book works off the ideas of other dimensions, and that when you die, your spirit simply leaves your body and goes to another dimension. Some characters, such as Ethan, Jayna and her brother, Liam, are able to 'shift' to other dimensions despite still being alive. The concepts themselves intrigued me enough that I want to now read the first book, and any subsequent ones!
The fact that I haven't read the first book didn't feel to hinder me in the slightest, things were explained, and the only thing I feel to have missed out on was the character arc towards the marriage between Ethan and Jayna. But as I mentioned above, this is something I will be changing shortly!
There was quite a lot of tension towards the end of the book, I was going to say action, but that doesn't seem to be the right word somehow. It was different from the fighting kind, much more psychological. Personally I enjoyed that, and thought that it made a nice change from physical action.
My only real problems with this book was that occasionally it would seem like things were repeated right after the were said, but that could just be me! And very occasionally some of the background characters just seemed to fall a bit flat, but that is understandable as the main characters and plot came first! More superficially, the endearment 'babe' was used a lot, in the right context I might add, its just an endearment that I don't personally like!
As always, my issues are very minor ones (after all its a book and it has words in it!). There were intriguing concepts and characters in The Astral Ordinance Book II and I would say it is a good read for Sci-fi or spirituality fans.

Cassie screamed with pain. “How does it feel to be on the receiving end of pain, Dr. Jewel?” “How do you know my name,” the Shadow woman asked squirming on the floor. “I know a lot of things about you, and none of it is good. Did you feel real powerful when you had helpless people kidnapped?” There was shock on Cassie’s grey face. “Yeah, I know all about it. You had three innocent people killed to get your dirty hands on that gold. You are scum Cassandra Jewel.” Jayna grabbed Cassie from the floor and threw her against the wall. Cassie cowered. “Were you planning to go to their funeral,” Jayna asked, “and pretend you were their friend? Maybe shed a few tears?” Jayna threw a powerful punch into Cassie’s solar plexus. Cassie doubled over with pain, coughing. “Stop it,” Cassie whispered hoarsely. “Why should I? Tell me one good reason I should not kill you?” Cassie coughed, still trying to catch her breath. Jayna, that’s enough. Ethan warned her. We are not here to kill anyone. That’s what the bitch deserves. Jayna turned around and saw a new stack of gold plates on the dining room table. “I see, you brought more gold from the Underworld,” she said to Cassie. She walked up to the table and scooped up the plates in her arms. They were about ten pounds. Awesome! We’ll make a few more miracles with these. Cassie screamed with rage again. “Put those back. You can’t have them. They are mine.” “Not on your life,” Jayna said and walked through the wall. Ethan and Colin followed her; they didn’t want to lose sight of Jayna for a second, in case the demon came back.
