Blog Tour & Giveaway: Script Kiddie by Michael F Stewart

Script Kiddie is the sequel to Assured Destruction (which I did read first but the review will be posted after). I received a copy of Script Kiddie in exchange for my honest review as part of a Tribute book tour.

After being given community service in the police department because of her crimes in Assured Destruction, Janus is charged with profiling a killer from a laptop she is given. At the same time she is having to deal with her Mum's worsening illness, her Mum's mysterious boyfriend, and she has to keep her own relationship with Jonny alive. Add to that, that her friend Hannah needs her help with a child lurer, and Janus has her hands full. Can she continue to do her work from a distance or will she end up in physically demanding situations again.

It has to be handed to Stewart, the sequel is as good as the first book, which can be quite difficult to achieve it must be said! Once again Janus' story is action packed, while maintaining her own teenage life. One of the things I really liked about her character is the fact that she makes mistakes, and not just mistakes in one part of her life, but rather in most of them. Though I am glad that by the end her and Jonny were still together, there was a moment where I was worried that they would break up. I have a serious problem with being too into fictional characters!

I thought that I took a slightly different approach to reading Script Kiddie than I did Assured Destruction, probably because I knew exactly what I was going to be reading, and by this point I'd already met Janus and felt like I had got to know her. At a push I think you could read Script Kiddie without reading the first book, but I don't think that you should, not just because it is a brilliant book, but because there are certain things that will make more sense, after all you can't expect the author to spend half of the book repeating the first one!

I was glad to see that Shadownet hadn't completely disappeared, and in the most part Jan uses them as twitter feeds, talking to one another. I guess this could come across as her being a little crazy, after all she does seem to have multiple personalities on Shadownet, but as a character herself she does seem pretty well rounded.

As with the first book, the style of Script Kiddie was lighthearted, despite the sometimes serious subject matter of the story, like the pedophile that Jan is determined to stop, and at times it had me laughing out loud. I would highly recommend reading Script Kiddie (after reading Assured Destruction that is), it is a brilliant series, and engaging in a way that really surprised me! After all, I never thought this was my kind of book before!
